Resource Guide

You can waste a LOT of time visiting sites with poorly written HTML tutorials and help guides.  Well, at least I did.  To save you the hassle of finding the best resources, I have summarized the places you should go to turn yourself into a top-notch web design professional.

Tutorials

http://bignosebird.com/ is a wonderful entry guide to Server Side Includes, Perl scripting, and manuevering through a Unix server.  If you have access to a Unix server (or one of the derivatives like Free BSD or Linux), you can use Bruce's guides to build an interactive and interesting site almost immediately.

Good Information / Community

http://www.perlmonks.com Perl Monks is a great site for any stage in your Perl programming development. I got into Perl originally because of the low learning curve. I stayed in it for the community. Hop over here and maybe you'll catch me on the site (as 'oakbox').

http://www.useit.com/alertbox/ A bi-weekly column by Dr. Jakob Nielsen, a principal of the Nielsen Norman Group.  Dr. Nielsen has been conducting useability studies on HTML since the mid 1980's.  This site is an invaluable resource when designing your own site because he discusses what works and what doesn't online.

http://www.slashdot.org Slashdot was originally created in september of 97 by Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda. Today it is owned by Andover.net. This is a place for technically minded people to post and talk about interesting things they have heard. The tag line for the site says it all, "News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters."

Perl Scripts (Free and otherwise)

http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/ CGI Resource Index has links to hundreds of scripts by different developers. The scripts are even rated by others who have used the program.

http://www.freshmeat.net/ Freshmeat is a large site with a variety of information about Perl and Unix issues. A valuable resource for the serious programmer and a place for you to see what is happening in the industry.

If you have other suggestions for sites that should be listed here, I welcome your feedback!
